Not Gone, Just A New Menu - TFL: The Last Order (01.17.2020)

“Why is the blog shutting down?” “What’s going to happen?” “It this really the last gig?” Who wouldn’t be asking these with a title like “The Last Order”? As the evening progressed, things started to make a bit more sense. It wasn’t the last of The Flying Lugaw - it was a change in menu.

Let’s talk about what the blog does best - curation. The Flying Lugaw always try to show their diverse musical tastes through it’s line up and the bands didn't disappoint - for the most part. First up was the 90’s OPM-tinged Nougat. At one point, I thought I was listening to an Eraserheads song. They sound like what The Revisors can be if they had more practice and polish. Good stuff, nonetheless. TNG was next and their return to Mow’s was explosive. In classic fashion, the set featured live art, emotions, a blistering pace, and a safe space for the audience to vent. Their sets really are an experience. Parlor Parlor followed with their mosh-friendly set and left everyone either aching or wanting more.

Ciudad was next but The Flying Lugaw had one more surprise for everyone. On the back wall was backdrop made up of a fake menu featuring cheap lugaw. It was hiding something. After an emotional speech, the crew tore it down revealing the new TFL logo. It was a rebranding - signifying the next step in the blog’s evolution. Much like how the musical landscape it supports evolves and adapts, so too must blog formerly known as The Flying Lugaw.

On to more music! Ciudad’s set was a pleasant surprise. Previous sets would include hits like My Emptiness but in this one, they songs from their new album. It’s a mellower set but still had that Ciudad-ness that makes them a must-watch. Things slowed down with Pappel’s acoustic, storytelling set. Great vocal control and pacing. And a great set up for the lively Serotonin. Half the band already played during Parlor Parlor’s set but they still delivered. Great indie rock/pop rock that kinda reminded me of Devices. Last was the Space Moses that left me slightly disappointed. The first time I saw the bassist was during the Kiyo and Alisson Shore set so my expectations were hearing RnB but that blast of rock’n’roll left me surprised and with high expectations. They had the energy and charisma but the sound was lacking. Nonetheless, the audience reciprocated that energy and the set got rowdier towards the end.

Even with a new logo and outlook TFL will still continue to support the community and introduce people to great music. The menu may have changed a bit, but the ingredients are still tasty and we can only wait to see the new savory dishes they have in store.
