"Spinning Music Video Launch" Gig Review

I haven't been to 70's Bistro in YEARS. Prior to my documentation work at Mow's, 70's Bistro was my go-to place for the bands I used to listen to growing up. Being back there, they upgraded their sound system - we were even luck enough to have house speakers in front of our table. Music videos were still played on either side of the stage - a staple for the venue in lieu of house music.

First up was Social Climb who indie rock in a similar style as Paper Satellites. Next were the ever reliable We Are Imaginary who always put on a good show. Butterfly Den played an interesting set with a style reminiscent of a mix of grunge and noise rock but with an apparent sheen of mainstream. New kids on the stage (formerly Maryknoll) were next and still delivered an enjoyable set even without the usual rambunctious crowd. Suspiria Pink played an energetic pop rock set to set the mood for the the headliners. After some technical difficulties with the music video premiere, Paper Satellites ended the night with a long set and even made a cover of All My Friends by LCD Soundsystem.

Even though the sound was the best in any venue I'v been to, I remembered what made covering 70's Bistro so difficult to cover. First was that the band played on a stage - making it feel like the event was more of a show that a communal experience. Second was that you only have a few locations where you can take photos and videos of the performers - the tables and seating arrangement get in the way of creating angles. Overall, it was still an enjoyable experience. It's rare that we get to sit while watching bands play.
