"Plastic Heartbeat" EP by Plastic Butter

After building an overwhelming anticipation from the previously released “Last Flight” single earlier this year, MUZIKA DEL SUR’s multi-awarded band from Davao City, Plastic Butter— independently released their EP, Plastic Heartbeat.

The five-track EP features the comeback carrier single, Hating Umaga— a dreamlike microcosm of the band’s eclectic career-- approaching 90's and early aughts nostalgia with a refined new perspective following their 10-year hiatus.

Mixed and mastered over the pandemic by legendary alternative producer, Jerome Velasco (Teeth, Daydream Cycle, Pupil), the track is a meditation on youthful affection and ephemerality, set to driving dreampop instrumentation.

Plastic Heartbeat EP is a love letter to local independent music— distilling the sound of indie nightlife, and the liminal spaces between. Four-on-the-floor stompers make way for more nuanced arrangements and a newfound love of modulated shimmer— ushering a new era for the band’s trademark stylistic plasticity.

Plastic Heartbeat is now available on Spotify, Apple Music, iTunes and other digital music streaming platforms with hashtags: #phtbt #plasticheartbeat #plasticbutter

Plastic Butter return from their hiatus as more mature individuals - dabbling more into other sounds but still keeping to what made their name. Compared to their first outing, there's a lot less dance-punk that was prevalent before making this release a more entertaining listen. The nostalgic vocals still bring that 90's vibe along with the production that sounds straight from that era. It's a solid release overall but sometimes I wished that there was a bit more push for modernity.
