PANAWAGAN: Kantahan para sa Ligtas na Balik-Eskwela! - Para sa Edukasyon at Kaligtasan (09.30.2020)

This pandemic has brought to light a lot of systematic issues in a lot of industries. Education did not escape the clutches of COVID19. Tulong Kabataan is doing its part in supporting the urban poor by throwing a online fundraising gig to address the economic issues that students as well as teachers are facing today. They curated an interesting mix of performers to provide entertainment while speakers provided the information.

Migs Mosuela is an acoustic act that performed live via Zoom. He deserves props for relying on our country’s bad internet to perform and for throwing a surprise cover of a Bullet Dumas song. The start was a bit rough but he ended strong. MarsMango was up next and billed as an atmospheric pop band and they delivered a lounge-y and laid back performance. Their set had technical difficulties during the playback of the first song but hosts took it as an example of the struggles of students with digital learning. A quick speech by the first speaker, Sean Thakur, served as a break as he expressed the need for the government to allocate funds for student’s online education. Up next was Saddlepin with some folk-pop tunes. EMN98 followed up with trap beats, a tasteful combination of RnB and hip hop while mixing english and tagalog verses, and rapping about fake news and women empowerment. Though she sounds more comfortable rapping in tagalog, definitely the best performance of the night. Jandeil Roperos was the second speaker of the event who was citing the importance for schools to provide economic support for students as well as teachers to ensure online classes are safe and productive. ACT was up next and showed initial promise with a j-rock/math rock instrumental opener but I felt disappointed with their OPM Alternative songs and the choppy playback throughout the rest of the set. Powie and Matthew of PARA PH played last separate sets - Powie sang a cover while Matthew performed a vocal live-looping set. Congresswoman Sarah Elago of the Kabataan Partylist ended the event with a highlight of what the partylist and Tulong Kabataan have done for the youth and an overview of the Shield Bill or HB 7620.

All in all, the event was entertaining especially with the inclusion of speakers. One point for improvement would be testing the playback of recorded performances. Those who played via Zoom were clear with minimal to no hiccups in audio so I doubt it was an internet issue but all the recorded performances were choppy. I’m looking for more educational and entertaining gigs.
