SAMthing Old, SAMthing New

Leave it to The UP Music Circle to make an event that showcases new talent and also be a force for good at the same time. The idea of SAMthing Old SAMthing New, as the org puts it, came from the genre change theme wherein songs are covered in a manner distinct from the original genre. They wanted to take the idea of putting a new spin onto songs we already know and love. Also integrated into the name is a little play on words with the name of their beneficiary: Sama-Sama Para Kay Sam.

The beneficiary for this event is Sama-Sama Para Kay Sam. Sama-Sama Para Kay Sam was started by Sam’s peers and friends from the Associate for Theatre Arts, Youth For Christ (YFC) North B, and Youth For Christ (YFC) UP Diliman for Sam Estorico.

Sam is a student enrolled in Associate Theatre Arts in the University of the Philippines Diliman, was initially diagnosed with UTI. However, his condition worsened and currently remains undiagnosed due to the lack of funds to pay for treatment. For the past month, online benefit concerts have been held in order to provide support towards Sam’s family.

As of May 2021, he is set to be screened for a CT PET scan. However, due to the lack of funds, he remains untested. With the challenges brought about by the pandemic, we hope to be of aid towards Sam’s recovery. Donation details are the following:

As for the event itself, hosts Alexandria and Matthew did a great job of hosting the event with smooth transitions to introduce each band. They even performed in their own respective bands - showcasing the multi-talented individuals in the org.

The show opened with Chordata’s mellow and choral renditions. Next up was Kahit na Ano Kasi Wala na Talaga Maisip Kaya Eto Nalang with Alexandria on vocals where they gave a tasteful cover of “How Deep Is Your Love” by The Bee Gees. _____ Canvas - pronounced “Blank Canvas” -  made good use of multiple vocals in the original song and even made a rock cover of Roses by The Chainsmokers complete with growls. She.Cries gave a heartfelt and gut wrenching set. Sage Meisters showcased their choral vocalization on all the covers. Yamashita Gold felt like a laid-back Sunday standards set. J.A.M.E.Z. had Matthew on vocals and fetaured punk rock renditions. Lastyl, Kare Kare Burrito brought their noise rock and psychedelia to the event where the (formerly Maryknoll), Parlor Parlor, and AUTOMAT DNA are definitely showing.

What’s amazing about the event is how it showcased the amount of talent that the org has. I’m at awe at how multi-instrumental the members are, how well-trained the vocalists are, and how amazing some members’ abilities are at managing multiple bands/personas. Any band or artist coming out from this org will be someone to look out for.
