Last November 1, Super Typhoon Rolly (international name: Super Typhoon Goni) hit the Philippines with intense rain and winds of up to 280 km/h, affecting an estimate of 68.6 million people (“Over 700,000,” 2020). Bicol Region, comprising Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Masbate, and Sorsogon, was brutally hit by the typhoon and suffered the most damage. According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, there are a total of 20 confirmed deaths and 3 missing persons*, with thousands more left displaced and shelterless. Super Typhoon Rolly hit the Philippines amid an 8-month-long lockdown, ordered by President Rodrigo Duterte to combat the COVID-19 virus. According to the international medical journal The Lancet, the Philippines is ranked 66th out of 91 countries in COVID-19 control, with a daily average of 1,800 new cases this past week alone (“New Cases,” n,d.).

In line with the collective’s ethos, BuwanBuwan has organized a pay-what-you-can compilation album to raise funds for the communities affected by Typhoon Rolly. Phoenicia features unreleased tracks, rough drafts, and secret projects from the collective’s roster as well as a contribution from our newest member, Ruiijikun. 100%* of the proceeds will be donated to various relief operations.
