"Furiosa 39" Gig Review

The second event of this back-to-back was a massive event to celebrate the 5th year Anniversary of shoegaze and dream pop production Furiosa. They pulled no punches with the line-up - showcasing a stellar lineup of emo, ska, noise, and shoegaze to keep things interesting.

The Mind Is A Terrible Thing opening the evening with their always entertaining set and it was a treat to watch them again before their writing break. Luncheon followed up with their math-rock tinged punk pop and the succeeding ska set from The Oemons took me on a nostalgic pre-pandemic middle-of-the-week Mow's when things were simpler. Irrevocable were next and they featured a lot of new songs that their planning to include in an upcoming EP. Dream pop faves bird. followed up with a solid set featuring all their hits. Furiosa staples The Rave Tapes brought the noise with a solid set of songs from their EP. Jeepney Joyride returned from their hiatus to play a very entertaining ska set with witty banter that go everyone laughing and dancing. Pastilan Dong! unleashed their OG 4-piece lineup to play a MASSIVE set. Baguio-based shoegaze band Turncoats made the long trip to play an equally long set that left to audience in awe. New Wave band Fun City Boys played an upbeat set that brought everyone back to life. Legarda capped the event off with a stripped down set to prove that you they can still bring it even with just two members playing.

The event was a celebration of the longevity and ever-changing landscape of the noise and obscure that Furiosa revel in. You can't always play the same tunes so you need to mix a couple of surprises in. From the early years of just having shoegaze and dreampop bands play to inserting other complimentary genres, it's not jut the music that keeps bonds but also the spirit of listening to great music and sharing the joy of listening to great music that ensures the longevity of the prod and the bands it caters to.
