"Molar EP Launch" Gig Review

Time heals all things. And helps release an EP. Started around 8 years ago, the Molar EP finally sees the light of day and is engulfed in glorious notes from twinkly riffs. The recordings were so old that the STEMS were almost un-workable - until Keith Coballes saved the day. Now, we have a time capsule of a time when the band members were still exploring different instruments and untouched by life.

Math-rock-hardcore trio Eiffel opened the evening with twinkly riffs and aggressive verbage. Emotive quartet Tidal were next with a shorter than usual set but made me more excited to hear their new songs. Math rock band Run Dorothy made their gig scene return after 2 years with a set that showed they have not lost a step even with a sub-in drummer for the evening. Noise rock band Pry were next and are my new favorite band. They are able to blend noise and indie rock with the attitude of a punk band and I hope they release music soon. Bird Dens were next and brought their free-flowing brand of blues/jazz with Oh, Flamingo DNA to change the evening's pace. Punk band Sleeping With A Gun opened their set with a cover Blink 182's Man Overboard and brought me back to my high school days listening to old cd's of Green Day on my walkman. Last up was Molar and they played all the songs off their EP as well as some unreleased/unrecorded songs that reminded me of The Mind Is A Terrible Thing - or should it be the other way around. Seeing Rhys, Ralph, and Tani play other instruments was a treat and show their great musicianship and band dynamic - it's a shame the EP got released 8 years late but better late than never.

The EP has shades of the members current bands. Listening to it feels like listening to your favorite band's influences only to say something backwards like "The Geeks sound like Ciudad" or "Molar sounds like The Mind Is A Terrible Thing". Either way, I'm glad this EP got to see the light of day - the missing link to some of today's great emo and hardcore bands.
