"Muerto Manila" EP by Run Deliks

Aptly named, “Muerto Manila” creatively describes the city's rampant cases of extrajudicial killings, and reflects the government's criminalization of mass struggle. With catchy tunes, in both English and Filipino, the 5-track EP is intended to reach a wider audience and to serve as a wake-up call to the unaware.

Inspired by the likes of KOLATERALMuerto Manila is political but with a satirical twist and easy-to-digest beats, making it perfect for ordinary listeners, without compromising its message.  An example is the 5th track on the album, PAPEL, which is a trap song from the perspective of trapo politicians.

Up-and-coming Manila-based rappers Blitzen and Shark started working on the album months after the first lockdown when they “noticed the increasing incompetence of the government when it comes to handling the pandemic.” According to them, even after more than a year, such incompetence is still prevalent as manifested in the police-perpetrated killings that occur with intensifying frequency. The album tackles these topics that aim to provide its listeners with something worthwhile to talk about.

The EP provides a concise yet strong message about the ongoing war on drugs in the Philippines leaning more towards the use of the english language to spread the horrors and realities of the current situation. A great listen especially with the inclusion of RnB among the hard-hitting rap verses.
