"Night" / "To N." Singles by 1AM

Cebu Indie band 1AM just released two singles - Night and To N.! Both singles are the same song lyrically both diverge sonically - Night leans more into the band’s RnB roots while To N. goes the vaporware route. Definitely a unique way of showcasing what a song could be.

I was able to get a quick chat with Kyle Marton, the band’s vocalist, about the releases.

JANLOR: What was your inspiration while writing "Night"/ "To N."?

KYLE: Me and my band, like, we have yet to release a love song and then "Night" came in just a day or so na nag-rush sakin yung feels na mag-random produce/record. Tapos I was watching this series na ni-recommend sakin ng isang indie girl sa manila scene and then parang dun nakuha yung main idea. It was, I think, "You" na series which is about how "obsession ruins you as a person" bale yun yung nag-stick agad na theme sakin. Naisip ko, why not make something about toxic relationship but covering it with citypop melodies to make it feel like a love song. Although lyrically love song naman talaga, pero kung ibe-breakdown, like sa isang perspective, bale dun siya magiging iba.

J: Why did you make two versions of the same song?

K: We just noticed like accidentally, iba yung hit ng synths kapag slow kaysa sa normal tsaka mas textured yung slow. Naisip namin, if ever man na malasing kami while driving tapos mababangga, yun yung parang first song na magpe-play tsaka yung night naman yung rason bakit kami mababangga.

Chill yung Night pero yung To N. yung flipside ng chill mo kapag na-alog ang utak, hehe.

J: How did the collaboration with To Judie happen?

K: I personally know To Judie. Bale, naging friend ko siya kasi pareho kaming fan nung artist na nagngangalang MAYE. Siya (To Judie) yung unang artist na kilala ko na nag-pop up sa isip ko to do this song. Although sakin yung whole production and writing, there's something about her voice na magfi-fill nung empty space sa song.

J: What can your fans expect for the future?

K: Bale, ito na yung last release namin for this year. A double A-side style release then by next year or so kapag na kumpleto yung EP, magda-dropp kami ng first ever EP namin.
