"The First Time" Single by The Geeks

After a couple of years, The Geeks finally released a new single - The First Time! Their first release under Lilystars Records, the song explores the emotional turbulence of being stood-up but only in the way that The Geeks can deliver. The song’s vibe is reminiscent of a Beach Boys slow dance tune with a surprising slide guitar riff playing throughout and an accompanying organ/piano in the chorus. The ending also rounds the song out very well with my brain fighting the urge to place unwanted “oh la la”’s until the song fades into the lonely darkness.

I was able have a quick chat with Jam to talk about their recent signing and what the future has in store.

JANLOR: What made the band say "yes" to signing with Lilystars Records?

JAM: A lot of us in the band grew up listening to early Lilystars releases.

The first time we got in contact with the label was maybe in 2014 when they invited us to play at a Saguijo Popshoppe gig. We’ve talked a few times over the years since then, but nothing ever really got serious.

Early last year, the label asked us to send a few tracks that we were working on, which they liked. On our part, we just wanted someone else to do the marketing work for us (which we never really did even when we were starting out).

JANLOR: Why did it take two years for the band to release new music?

JAM: We’ve been really busy with our lives plus we wanted to just take a little break from recording. We’ve been releasing a lot of music since we first came out, and that can get tiring, too.

JANLOR: How has the band adapted to the pandemic?

JAM: It’s been 2 years since we’ve released anything, so we have a ton of new demos ready to be arranged. The pandemic has made it hard to get together as a band, so these songs have to wait a little bit longer.

We’ve also played a few online gigs (more TBA soon!), so that’s something new. We’re not usually the kind of people to show our faces in videos or photoshoots, but we’re adjusting.

JANLOR: Aside from the single, what else can your fans expect from the band this year?

JAM: Our label is coming up with a few compilations in the coming months. We’ll hopefully be contributing to these as long as we finish writing and recording the songs (before our deadlines!!).

We may release a new single before the year ends. I’m not sure. I think we have enough material for a new album, but we’ll never know what happens to the songs as long as the country’s situation remains unstable.
